Founded in 2012, we’ve taken our passion for learning and genuine interest in students and used it to help families thrive.
As teachers and parents ourselves, we know that parent and student expectations are often a source of conflict and stress.
We listen, provide honest feedback, and form a plan of how to best support your child’s education. We create a space for safe, open communication—allowing us to set realistic expectations and create the best educational plan for your student.

Emma has twenty years of experience working with parents and students as a teacher and administrator. Her expertise in academic strategies and knowledge of school systems form the base of the services offered by HLS. She has extensive training in special education law and policy, as well as administrative leadership.
As an administrator in charge of student achievement and as a special education teacher for a variety of school districts nationwide, she has worked with students of all ages and learning styles. Also, as part of Western Washington University, Emma has overseen student teachers in local schools, providing feedback on instruction technique and classroom management. She actively tutors students at HLS and does all of the company’s advocacy.
Matt has taught in diverse fields and at all age levels, from elementary to college, for the last decade. Strong in both the liberal arts and sciences, Matt is our lead instructor for SAT/ACT prep courses and primary high school and college tutor.
With a Master of Arts in English from the University of Oregon, he’s an excellent resource for students experiencing challenges in English or who need help composing papers in any subject. A published writer and former journalist, Matt uses these skills to help students succeed in the daunting task of writing papers.
Our professional team of tutors at HLS is committed to developing academic and behavioral improvements for our clients. We’ll help you get the most from the educational system while providing research-based, individualized instruction. Our support systems, strategies, and advocacy assist you in charting a path to success and restoring your optimism.
Because we know that education is so much more than content-area knowledge, we select our tutors based not just on their subject matter expertise but also on their dynamism, engagement, and pedagogical styles.
