How We Work

Students work under the guidance of expert instructors, with Matt Hawthorne leading the Reading test prep and our lead math instructor teaching the math section. This guarantees expert instruction in each subject area, rather than one instructor trying to cover all materials.

One-on-One Instruction Available

For students who want a more tailored approach to instruction, we develop a plan of action based on an assessment of an individual’s strengths and weaknesses. If a student has already taken the test, we’ll analyze the results to determine the most efficient and effective way to improve scores. Whether we focus on content, timing—or both—we’ll build upon strengths and focus on problematic areas. This is a great option for seniors!

We’re also happy to schedule small-group test prep classes and have flexible hours to accommodate students’ busy schedules.

Easy Transition to the ACT

Following completion of our SAT Prep Course, it’s easy to transition to the ACT with our 4-hour “Bridge Course.” Building on skills already mastered, we cover the different content and strategies necessary for the ACT. The Science Section? A new essay format? Trigonometry on the test? We’ve got it covered.

Canadian Students Welcome

If you’re a parent in Canada and struggling to understand college admissions and testing in the United States, we can help. We have years of experience guiding Canadian high school students through the SAT and ACT. We provide the context, knowledge and strategies that international students need to succeed.

Why HLS

Unlike at national chains, our instructors have years of experience and have created their own curriculum based on continual refinement of materials and strategies. Our passionate instructors help students engage challenging material and retain strategies and content. We have a proven track record of improved scores, a necessary part of successful college applications.

Your child will not only learn content but will know when to guess and in what order to do the test problems. With flexible scheduling and prep options, we’ll make sure students can fit high-quality test prep into their busy lives without needing to drive to Seattle.

FAQs

Both the SAT and ACT are accepted at major colleges across the country. In general, the SAT is harder but has more time per question; the ACT has a Science Section and is a bit easier overall, but allows less time per question.

Students should take the SAT or ACT in the spring of their junior year—register at least six weeks in advance. They can re-test in the fall of their senior year.

The SAT is out of 1600 points: 800 for Reading/Writing and 800 for Math.

The ACT is out of 36 for each section: English, Math, Reading, Science.

The Math Sections on both the SAT/ACT go from easy to more difficult.

Reading and Writing Sections are in random order of difficulty.

Never leave an answer blank—there’s no penalty for wrong answers.

In Advance

Print the registration ticket in advance and find the test center prior to the test date.

On Test Day

Your child should arrive early with a calculator, number two pencils, snacks and liquids, and an analog wrist watch (they shouldn’t rely on the proctor for time keeping).

Here are links to the calculator policies for each test:
