We help students transition and succeed in college, whether that’s providing students support in their first quarter or later in their time at WWU.
HLS meets one-on-one with your college student in Bellingham or remotely for content tutoring or executive function skills coaching. Our tutoring can help students thrive in English 101 or the Organic Chemistry series. Additionally, our executive function skills coaching sessions will help students self advocate with professors through email and office hours, understanding class syllabus and course expectations, use a planner and master effective study habits and time management
Together, we’ll assess your student’s strengths and challenges to develop a personalized plan
We’ll review course materials and communicate with professors to set your student on the right path
Content-area experts will support your student with personalized attention to meet his or her academic needs
Phone calls and texts will provide your student with additional support while email updates keep you in the loop
In addition to our organization and academic coaching, HLS offers support for your child—providing support systems away from home so you don’t have to worry from afar. In Bellingham, we provide encouragement and support through in person or online meetings, texts and phone calls.
We also can help students arrange meetings with the counseling center on Western Washington’s campus and work with a network of local resources. We’ll make sure your child is getting the accommodations, support, and attention they need.
After we’ve put support structures in place so your child can succeed, we get down to school work. Our team of specialized tutors can offer expert instruction in the most challenging college courses—from organic chemistry to calculus.
In addition to content tutoring, we also work on the foundations of college learning: note taking for classes and textbook readings, brainstorming and outlining term papers, and preparing for exams.
We know it’s stressful when your child is struggling at school or has fallen behind, so we provide the support everyone needs. With flexible scheduling, individualized sessions, and tutors who are committed, professional, and experienced, your work with HLS will be easy to arrange and productive.
Regular communication will ensure that our work is aligned with what’s going on at the university. You’ll see your child’s confidence, happiness, and self-esteem rise as they start to feel successful!
Frequency and length of tutoring sessions vary but range between 1-2 times per week for 55 to 85 minutes per session.
We strive to pair students with the same tutor; however, schedules sometimes change and so do tutors. Our goal is a consistent match.
We value feedback and know that a good fit is key to successful learning. If it isn’t a good fit, please let us know and we will pair your student with a different tutor.
Tutoring sessions are at our learning center at 2110 Iron Street in Bellingham’s Sunnyland neighborhood. We also offer zoom and online sessions.
All of our time is important—we value your time and ours. We request notice of change of availability or cancellations by Thursday at noon of the week prior. Cancellations and changes made after this will be charged in full. This is to avoid changes that cause work on our end and impact other families as we request time/day changes. If you are late, we will text and call you after 5 minutes. After 15 minutes, the meeting will be closed and there will be a cancellation charge.
